1. Call to order: Meeting was called to order by President Ron  at 7:05 pm.

2. WELCOME TO NEWCOMERS: The club warmly welcomed Steve and Noreen Sipma’s neighbors, Sandy and Elliot, new divers. Sandy and Elliot were certified in Cozumel and already have some interesting dive experiences to share.

3. MINUTES: Minutes from the meeting of July 13 were approved by club members.

4. TREASURERS’ REPORT: In the absence of Treasurer Julie, Denis presented the Treasurer’s Report. Same as last month minus $106.66 paid to Patricia to reimburse her for prize purchases (scavenger hunt).

5. OLD BUSINESS:

  • PHOTO SHOW: Club members may display their photos at Arcata Exchange during the month of September 2010. Dave will send out an announcement by email letting members know details. Since Arcata Arts Alive is scheduled for September 10, the date to hang photos will be sometime before then.
  • MARINE LIFE PROTECTION ACT (MLPA): Charlie has been attending meetings, including a two day meeting last week in Ft. Bragg. [See newsletter for links for more information.] He mentioned there has been discussion over whether northern California guidelines should be the same as those of southern California. Discussion among group.
  • JETTY DIVE: This dive is scheduled for Saturday, August 21 (with Sunday, August 22 as a potential alternate). BBQ will follow at the Whites at 4pm Saturday. The club voted to pay for meat and salmon and club members are requested to bring side dishes and drinks. Dave will send out email announcing event. Please RSVP by replying to his email – how many attending, what you plan to bring.
  • SWEATSHIRTS: Available now. Let Ron know if you’d like to purchase one and he’ll bring it to the next meeting.
  • WHISKEYTOWN DIVE: The club has chosen this site to participate in the annual California Coastal Clean-up on Saturday, September 25. Some club members will be camping from September 24-26. Contact Ron for camping details.

6. NEW BUSINESS:

  • MEETING / EVENT PARTICIPATION: Poor attendance at meetings and dives has been on the rise the last couple of years so a discussion on improvement in these areas was introduced. Ideas: Times-Standard/HSU Lumberjack/ North Coast Journal articles with pictures, KHSU Day Sponsorship or Community Calendar, Public Service Announcements and radio interviews, tabling…  Other ideas about meetings included: going on hiatus in summer, having meetings but no presentations in summer months, changing the night of the week for meetings, having meetings quarterly instead of monthly… Discussion to be continued at the September meeting when more members might be in attendance. Ideas from all members are welcomed – email Dave.
  • 2011 ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS: In January the club will elect new officers for the positions of President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and Newsletter Sender. Please think seriously about contributing to the club by running (or re-running) for an office. If you’re interested in one of these positions, show up at the January potluck (date and location to be announced at a meeting later this year) or, if you can’t make it, let Ron know you’re interested.
  • RECENT DIVES: Smith River Dive was fun for divers and non-divers alike. Patricia dove early to place hidden abalone shells and a golf ball. Divers brought up one shell and two golf balls (?) so had to go back. Thank you again to Patricia for making this dive so much fun. … Steve and Frank went ab-diving at the Mendocino Headlands recently. Steve said it was a gorgeous dive with decent viz and a bit of swell – they even got some abs. …Charlie went scallop diving and brought back shell-less meat. …Elliot and Sandy got certified in Cozumel with Aqua Safari and got in lots of dives, then went across to the mainland to Islas Mujeres and started their list of interesting dive experiences.
  • PRO-SPORT: Charlie was able to get club members a 10% discount on tank servicing at Pro-Sport. Be sure to bring your Humboldt Skindivers membership card.
  • PHOTO CONTEST: Donna W recommended that the photos be judged within the club this time, ending with a vote for “Best of Show.” She suggested that there be no categories and that all photos be welcomed so more could participate in the April contest. Julie moved that Donna W & Donna Q tell the club about the contest parameters at the February meeting. (2nd-Denis & Cliff)

7. PRESENTATION: Thank you to Mary VanCott for her slideshow on “Dive Medicine,” a review of dive medical conditions and safety concerns, including answers to questions even experienced divers may not think to ask. Afterward, her talk sparked a lively discussion on regulator mouthpieces and vomiting. Good thing dinner was over.

7. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

The next meeting will be September  14 at 7:00 p.m. at Chan’s Restaurant, 359 “G” Street, Arcata.
